Living in South Florida, one soon discovers the importance of – what we in the biz call – “Window Treatments.” I’ve installed so many different types of window treatments in my short time here that I’ve been dubbed “The Master of the Window Treatment.” Why? Because with a myriad of options from which to choose, many of you end up at a loss for which treatment in which to invest. So, inevitably I’m asked: “What’s the best solution for both managing the light – and, more importantly, the heat – and providing privacy for my windows?” Well, as with anything worth its weight in gold in this life, the answer depends on many factors.
First, decide how much money you want to invest in the solution. Why? Because the budget determines the solution. Then, with your budget in mind, think about the problem you want to resolve. Are you seeking privacy versus a room darkening solution? Well, then consider sheers or light-filtering shades. They provide privacy while letting the light shine in. Large expanses of windows or sliding doors? Then you may decide on a motorized solution, eliminating the need to manually and individually open and close draperies or roller shades using a pull cord. Again, budget determines your best solution.
A manually-operated roller shade – cord loop or cordless – costs significantly less than traversing draperies or – the even slightly more economical – traversing sheers. Understand what you’re trying to resolve. The key to an effective window treatment solution lies in what you’re trying to achieve.
If you simply wish to block out the light, then go with a basic manually-operated blackout roller shade. Yet, on the other end of the spectrum, if you wish to make a statement – say in a formal living room – then consider motorizing those roller shades and layering them with traversing draperies. Taking it a step further, add a layer of motorized traversing sheers between the draperies and the roller shade. Now, you’ve a triple-threat solution: roller shades, sheers and draperies, offering a way to block the light and provide privacy twenty four seven, all at the touch of your fingertips via motorization. Just remember, you get what you pay for and you may pay heftily for a triple-layer, triple-motorized solution, BUT you’ll have achieved versatility and ease of use.
Ultimately, as a wise man (my brother, Mark) once said to me: “Buy the one you want. You’re going to live with it a long time, so make sure it’s really what you want.” Among a host of other great ideas he’s shared with me, this remains one of my all time favorites. And, it applies to so many things including window treatments. You only live once, so why not – coming full circle – go for the gold? What might you be accomplishing by taking the low road anyway? As another great old saying goes: “You can’t take it with you.” So, why not treat yourself? If not you, then who?
At the end of the day, just make sure that when you draw the shades – or draperies or sheers or some combination of the three – that you’re happy with your decision. And, if you’re not sure which solution to implement, hire a professional to guide you. That’s what interior designers do. We help others pull together “the look” they seek, but can’t pull together themselves. And, as the Master of the Window Treatment, I assuredly will provide the best solution for your window treatment dilemmas. Contact me. You won’t regret it. In the meantime, as always, be well and enjoy!
